Mark volunteers to organize events at This House of Books. In his previous life, he worked for over 30 years in rural school districts as an educational psychologist. He retains membership in the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). As an undergraduate, he completed full majors in art and English.
As a white guy I don't think there is a better introduction to contemporary Native writers than these indispensible volumes. This is stuff you won't find anywhere else. Stories by Native writers who are working through some major stuff. I am particularly going to recommend work by Cinnamon Spear, which can bring me to tears, and work by Sterling HolyWhiteMountain. Hint: I had to read Sterling's work out loud and listen carefully. Mind blowing.
Sneed Collard is one of the most amazing science writers I have ever met. He writes books for children that are good enough to be reviewed in the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, one of the two most important journals of general science in the English language.
Sneed is the offspring of a couple of scientists, so he grew up in the business. Even more, he is like the Mr. Rogers of science writers, he is so good with children. I love his books, and I personally look at Sneed as a role model.
Firebirds is an amazing book and it could not be more timely.
