Winnie the Pooh Day is celebrated on the birthday of author A.A. Milne. One of the most well-loved characters of all time, Pooh was based on the teddy bear owned by A.A. Milne’s son, Christopher Robin.

But did you know that Winnie the Pooh was named for a real-life bear from Winnipeg, Manitoba named Winnie? The stuffed bear first appeared in a poem in 1924, but the Winnie the Pooh series launched in 1926.
