Celebrating Jane Austen
Come help us celebrate Jane Austen Day, Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 4:00 to 7:00. We have some special things in store for this event.
It is not too early for you to begin your planning. You may need this time if you plan to attend in proper Regency costume!
The program includes lively discussions of Jane Austin’s work, focusing on Pride and Prejudice. We observe, though, that even at age 16, Austen showed exceptional talent and a scalding wit. We are including special presentations about the "bad girl" Jane Austen as a young writer. Our panel will discuss writers who influenced Austen, and those she influenced, particularly Virginia Woolf. Finally, there are many excellent films based on Austen’s novels and our experts will explore those.
Balls and dancing are featured in every book Austen wrote. We plan to conclude our evening with a quick workshop to learn Regency dancing. Patricia Hampton, who has her own dance studio, has agreed to be our instructor.
Bring your friends!
We encourage participants to dress for the occasion. You can spend some time familiarizing yourself with Regency wardrobe. The website for the Jane Austen festival in Bath, England has some ideas for ladies and for gentlemen.
“You don't have to know the books to be in the club.”
