Author event: Phil Parker
On Veteran’s Day, Monday, November 11, at 3:00 PM, This House of Books hosts Lt. Commander Phillip K. Parker, USNR (ret.) as he presents his book, The National Tour of the USS Constitution 1931-1934.
At the height of the Great Depression, the newly restored United States Frigate Constitution, the famous “Old Ironsides”, was taken on a tour of ports along the east and west coasts of the country. The tour lasted three years, visited 76 American ports and hosted more than four million visitors. At a time of great stress on the people, the stately frigate was a proud reminder of our naval heritage and our bravery and resilience in the face of adversity. Billings resident and retired Naval Reservist Phillip Parker has written a detailed history of this unique public relations campaign. It includes descriptions of the Captain and crew selected for the tour, a chronological history of the tour and much more. Lieutenant Commander Parker’s interest in the National Tour was sparked by conversations with a great uncle, Harry Moore, who was a crew member for the entire duration of the tour. This book will be of interest to Navy Veterans, history buffs and the general reader.
