Midway Bravery features the story of Jim Muir, who grew up near Miles City, and what he did one day to earn the Distinguished Service Cross during World War II.
Muri was the pilot of a B-26 bomber. When the Japanese Navy attacked at Midway, He had never flown a mission before. Even so, Muri was sent out to attack the aircraft carrier Akagi, the flagship of the Japanese fleet. On the way, his formation was intercepted by Japanese aircraft. Muri dropped a torpedo, but it missed the target. By then he was under heavy fire and he had to get himself and his crew away. Thinking quickly, realized that if he buzzed the deck of the Akagi, no one defending the carrier would be able to shoot at him without hitting the carrier itself. The move paid off. Muri was able to get away and return his B-26 to Midway.
The author, Dennis Gaub, is from Miles City. He graduated from high school in Billings and spent years here working as a reporter for the Billings Gazette. He is also the author of Win 'em All: Little Laurel Wins Montana's Biggest Basketball Trophy.
